Dr. Md. Zahidul Islam is currently serving as a Professor at the Department of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering, Jahangirnagar University, Savar, Dhaka, Bangladesh. He joined the Department of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering at Jahangirnagar University as a Lecturer. Subsequently, he served as an Assistant Professor and Associate Professor in the same Department. Dr. Islam earned his Ph.D. from Shizuoka University, Japan, in 2015. He obtained both his M.S. and B.Sc. degrees in Biotechnology from Khulna University, Bangladesh, in 2003 and 2001, respectively.
He served as a Visiting Associate Professor at the Research Institute of Electronics, Shizuoka University, Japan, from April 1, 2023 to July 30, 2023. As a Postdoctoral Research Fellow, he worked at the Graduate School of Science and Technology, Shizuoka University, during the following periods: October 1, 2015 to December 9, 2016, August 29, 2022 to March 31, 2023 and August 1, 2023 to November 30, 2023.
From 2003 to 2012, Dr. Islam also worked in the Quality Control Departments of several pharmaceutical companies, including Medimet Pharmaceuticals Ltd., General Pharmaceuticals Ltd., Sanofi-Aventis Bangladesh Ltd. (formerly Fisons BD Ltd., Hoechst Marion Roussel Ltd., and Rhone-Poulenc Rorer BD Ltd.), and Incepta Vaccine Ltd.
His current research focuses on revealing the mechanism and mode of action of antimicrobial peptides (such as Magainin 2, Lactoferricin B, LfcinB [4–9], and PGLa) on the bacterial cell membrane using the single-bacterium method. He is also exploring the interaction of cell-penetrating peptides (such as Transportan10 and Poly-arginine) with lipid bilayer membranes using the single-GUV (Giant Unilamellar Vesicle) method. Additionally, he aims to establish a functional and sustainable bio-system engineering process for producing commercial products using various immobilized enzymes.
Dr. Islam has published extensively in national and international peer-reviewed journals across multiple disciplines, including Microbiology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physics, Biophysics, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, and Nanotechnology.
